Blakiston’s fish owl
Our honorary non-human board member for March 2026 is a remarkable owl that we believe truly deserves more attention - Blakiston’s fish owl.
This endangered owl is the largest in the world (based on average size), and is native to China, Japan, and the Russian Far East.
See below for some owl-ragiously interesting (but not in the slightest bit fishy) facts about this special bird, and listen to this owl’s wonderfully deep four-note duet.
Blakiston’s fish owl is the subject of biologist @jonathanslaght’s award-winning book, ‘Owls of the Eastern Ice’, which details his quest to save the owl alongside colleagues including Sergey Surmach, who recorded the owl duet.
